Narcissists can't empathise or love and, therefore, have no friends. The narcissist is one track minded. He is interested in securing Narcissistic Supply from Narcissistic Supply Sources. He is not interested in people as such. He is incapable of empathising, is a solipsist, and recognises only himself as human. To the narcissist, all others are three dimensional cartoons, tools and instruments in the tedious and Sisyphean task of generating and consuming Narcissistic Supply.
From the book "Malignant Self-love: Narcissism Revisited" by Dr. Sam Vaknin
To me and apparently many others, Barack Obama's narcissism was evident even during the campaign of 2008. His transparently self-involved oratory and grotesque sense of hubris were jaw-droppers even to those who were not qualified to diagnose the heir apparent to American Marxist legacy.
After the election, of course, we - that "we" being the unqualified - were vindicated with the trickle, and then the flow of material from credentialed clinical psychologists and psychiatrists who began to write on the narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) that, they believed, was manifest in our president. It goes without saying that these appraisals have been dismissed by the political left as Republican propaganda, the work of racists and big fat haters.
That being acknowledged, some of the more thorough and user-friendly work on narcissism and NPD has been done by Dr. Sam Vaknin, an Israel-born psychological counselor and author. While Dr. Vaknin is not on the "get Obama" bandwagon (he describes himself as a progressive), his voluminous work is quite disturbing when viewed in the context of other professionals' assessments of the President, as well as the latter's behavior.
Considering the opening excerpt and relating it to Obama, the conflict to which this circumstance gives rise ought not be underestimated. As Dr. Vaknin asserts, the narcissist (in this case, Barack Obama) craves Narcissistic Supply. We saw how he shone during the 2008 campaign, and waned afterward. This could be because he was deprived of the adulation and universal glad-handing that was lavished upon him during the campaign. Suddenly, he was expected to perform (give), and his ability was lacking. Many have noticed in recent weeks that the President appears drawn, "beaten down" (as radical socialist comedian Bill Maher pointed out); some have even speculated that he may be drugged.
So, Obama, a creature of self-love, fueled by superficial demonstrations of external love, must be "loved" - such as it is - in order to thrive. Yet, as an inflexible and dedicated devotee of radical Marxist ideology, he is committed to throwing the nation - primarily via the economy - into abject chaos. This he is doing very effectively - but it isn't the course of action that's going to engender a whole lotta love amongst the American people. One of the most unendearing things in the litany of Obama foibles is, of course, the increasing unemployment rate. People would just love it if Obama cultivated an atmosphere that might give rise to new jobs (other than at the TSA), but fostering widespread unemployment is part of his agenda.
Obviously, Obama's November "shellacking" was evidence of this "lack of love" in action. In addition to this calamitous turn of events, progressive weasels such as the funereal Maher have deemed Obama to be a wimp for his lack of willingness to "go gangsta" (Maher's words) on congressional Republicans. To make matters worse, there are apparently accounts of Obama insiders leaking damaging information to journalists in the alternative press pertaining to Obama's fits of rage and paranoia, as well as whisperings of those around him considering his removal for incapacity under Amendment 25.
The reality of radical leftists being a scant minority in America was not lost on Obama; he simply intended to make us all obey, by and by. The fact that he would alienate two-thirds of the electorate (as well as just as many who don't regularly vote) is testimony to the narcissist's belief that he or she can do or have anything, and that the "three dimensional cartoons" surrounding him or her ought to simply comply.
It's when they don't that such as Obama are completely taken aback. Now that he is in that limbo between love and hate, where Obama will go in the mental/emotional sense at this point is anyone's guess. Since "[M]any scholars consider pathological narcissism to be a form of depressive illness, [T]he life of the typical narcissist is, indeed, punctuated with recurrent bouts of dysphoria, (ubiquitous sadness and hopelessness), anhedonia (loss of the ability to feel pleasure), and clinical forms of depression" (Vaknin).
There is certainly precedent for world leaders who crashed and burned, later being evaluated as megalomaniacal malignant narcissists. Even Richard Nixon, who was fairly low on this scale, was - as the reader may recall - nearly non-functional by the end of his presidency.
