RIT - NTID - NTID News - NTID Attends CIA's Deaf Summit

John Macko, the director of NTID's Center on Employment, and Linda Iacelli, NCE's assistant director, visited the Central Intelligence Agency headquarters in Langley, Va. on June 18 to attend a Deaf Summit.

The first-of-its-kind summit for the CIA was an opportunity to interact with colleagues from other schools and colleges that serve deaf and hard-of-hearing students. They attended briefings from agency officials who spoke about co-op and job opportunities and met deaf and hard-of-hearing employees who work at the CIA - including graduates of RIT/NTID.

Fran Edelen, the CIA's disability recruitment officer, said the agency wants qualified students to consider working for the CIA, which offers accommodations for its deaf and hard-of-hearing employees. The CIA has a staff of sign language interpreters - all with security clearances - who work in their headquarters.

Jobs available in the CIA are related to computer science, electronic systems, mechanical engineering, operational engineering, and more. There are even openings for people interested in working with cosmetics, theater makeup and costuming.

Job candidates will have to pass a security clearance and polygraph test.

The CIA has attended job fairs in the past - including the one held each fall at NTID. Edelen said personal visits to campus will be held for informational sessions. "We're able to give more time to the students and give them more one-on-one attention," she said.

Edelen said students looking for a paid co-op experience or a full-time job should visit www.CIA.gov for job postings that are regularly updated. Co-op applications for next year are due before Nov. 1.
