Nowhere to go for deaf-mute - Northern Territory News

THE case of a deaf-mute man ruled unfit to plead to the stabbing murder of a man and other violent offences is "just one example of what's going to come over the next six months", a court has heard.

Roland Ebatarintja has been in prison for the past month, after repeatedly breaking the conditions of the non-custodial supervision order that was put in place in 2005.

Health Department lawyer Duncan Farquhar said the department was training someone to communicate with Mr Ebatarintja because the organisation that had been caring for him no longer would. Mr Farquhar said that once the department found suitable accommodation, security staff would back up carers.

Justice Trevor Riley remanded Mr Ebatarintja in custody until January. But Mr Ebatarintja's legal aid lawyer Michelle Swift said she had another four files of a similar nature going through a similar process.

"I'm just concerned there will be some people who shouldn't be spending time in prison (but) will be spending time in prison," she said.
