German jailed for aping cannibal
Ralf M was fascinated by Meiwes' crimes
A German man who claimed inspiration from notorious cannibal killer Armin Meiwes and murdered his gay lover has been detained for 13 years.
Ralf M, as he was identified in a Berlin court, stabbed and dismembered Joe R, whom he had met through a personal advertisement on the internet.
He stored some of the organs, and fed other body parts to his cats.
The court ordered that the 41-year-old unemployed painter be sent to a psychiatric clinic for treatment.
Ralf M said he was driven by cannibal fantasies.
Experts concurred, deciding that he was obsessed by fantasies of butchery and flesh eating.
Prosecutors had sought a 15-year sentence, but the sentence was reduced on grounds of diminished responsibility.
Confession
Ralf M's defence lawyer, Detlev Binder, told the Berlin court that the Meiwes case was a "catalyst" for his client.
Meiwes was found guilty last year of killing and eating a man he met online, in a case which shocked and gripped Germany.
Ralf M placed an advert on a gay website calling for a "svelte man, around 30, for a holiday roast dinner".
He confessed to killing his victim with a screwdriver during a sado-masochistic sexual encounter at his apartment in Neukoelln, in southern Berlin.
Ralf M cut up the dead man's body and stored parts of it.
Joe R's torso, legs and arms were later discovered in the apartment. His heart, kidneys, liver and lungs were in the refrigerator.
Ralf M said he had planned to eat his victim, but in the end he was too disgusted to go through with it - although he did feed parts to his cats.
