A Nashua hospital has agreed to provide services for deaf and hearing impaired patients as part of a settlement with two patients who accused St. Joseph Hospital of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The two patients, Sheila Coombs and Gary Catania, who are both deaf, said they were unable to communicate sufficiently with the hospital or SJ Physician Services workers while they or their children were getting medical treatment between 2005 and 2008 because the hospital failed to provide sign language interpreters.

In the settlement announced Tuesday, St. Joseph and SJ Physicians also have agreed to forgive the patients' $10,000 in bills. The U.S. Attorney's office says the hospital didn't admit any liability in the case.
