Hi, my name is Rae. I have been "seeing" J for about 3 months now. I met him about 4 years ago, but lost touch after a few months. At that time we were both in college and not looking for a relationship. I knew a little signing from when my boys were babies (I learned the basics...ABC, drink, water, more, etc), so that helped.

Well we got back in touch again in April and I have learned so much more now. Granted I am not fluent, and I give him the "huh, sign it again please...SLOWLY" look at least a few times an hour...lol...but it is getting better. I have 3 boys (10, 8, almost 6) from my first marriage, and they have been picking up pretty quickly with the signs. They know that J and I are just friends, but they still beg him to come over and like teaching him the new things they have learned (watching videos about signing online/ipod/or books).

I found this site by chance, and really hoping it would provide some good insite about the deaf community and relationship...and maybe a nice release of frustration...lol

Why are you frustrated? Because it's hard to learn Asl as an adult? I can relate to that. Keep on trying and you'll get it. I had to work hard. Some people seem to learn easier - maybe more visual/spatial than me? I have a hard time w/o printed words. I have the same issue learning Spanish and French too.
Welcome to AD!

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I like learning new signs and try to use them as much as possible in my daily (hearing) life. I guess i just get frustrated when i am spelling something wrong, or i can't sign faster enough to explain what is going on.

I know it will get easier, but still frustrating. I'm a very talkative person, so sitting in the car trying to drive and sign at the same time can be a little...ummm..lets just say he double checks his seat belt a lot..lol. I'm just glad I found this group, and hopefully get some tips and advice on how to keep things working.

Hi! I am also new here.. met my fiance online on. Dating site, and was very intrigued! I have never seen his being deaf as an issue or a disability, rather something that made him extra special. I have problems of my own and we both.support each other.. we have a great relationship, we communicate just fine, either by what sign I know, or writing it down on paper.. a lot of times its almost like we just.can read each other.. my kids just love him to death.. I will be meeting his kids in two weeks they are still very young as mine are 19 and 12: they have learned sign aLong with me I prefer to learn straight from j.. since j believe each deaf person signs with their own dialect I also believe that we will have a wonderful future together.. we get omg great, never fight.. help each other. Just like a normal couple.he is a good man and he has chosen to love me, I wonder why sometimes.. lol I figured I would share my story with u all.. I look
forward to speaking.with u all..
