Mabel Davis has been head of Heathlands School for the Deaf in St Albans for the past 15 years and is profoundly deaf herself. She is the only deaf head teacher in the country and encourages more people with disabilities to go into teaching.

She qualified as a teacher of the deaf in 1981, having previously taught at schools in Liverpool and Brighton and, in 1993, she received the RADAR (Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation) People of the Year Award for services to education.

Ms Davis said this week: "This is a rewarding culmination to what has been a highly challenging career.

"Breaking through any glass ceiling is never easy and would not have been possible without the support of my family, friends and professional colleagues. I am grateful to them all."

She added: "Hopefully this recognition will encourage people with a disability to aspire high and value the encouragement that is received on the way."
