New van puts Grimsby Deaf Social Club in driving seat
A GRIMSBY charity has received a welcome boost after falling on hard times.
The Grimsby and District Social Deaf Club lost its on base in Hainton Avenue in 2006, meaning they now have to travel all over the country to visit other deaf clubs as part of their social calendar.
Members of the club – formed in 1950 – have been paying their own travel expenses so that they are able to continue being part of the club.
Now they will no longer be out of pocket as they have secured the funds to buy a new minibus.
Peter Rimmer (61), of Grimsby, is the club treasurer and is delighted to have secured the bus.
He said: "The club does not receive a grant fund from the council or the government.
"Members travel to other places by car and train and that comes from their own pocket money.
"It has taken us three years to raise the funds that have enabled us to buy this minibus.
"All the members are excited and pleased by it."
