New TV, new CC problems..

Good news !!!

we did get thru to somebody at Telus anyway, and they told us the STB we have does support CC, and explained how to turn them on, and we did!
and now the CC works with the HDMI cable on!!!

I am so happy!!!

I still think the old digital TV was far better, but eh, maybe I'll get used to it, lolol

Thank you all for all your suggestions and for some more, too!! yay!!

Fuzzy

ps - if anyone need an instruction how to turn on CC in this box, pls let me and I'll explain here.

Or just use SDH (English Subtitle for Deaf/Hard of hearing) on DVD regardless what cables to use.

One more question, just out of curiosity - do you mean to watch TV thru
a DVD player to get the SDH, or just watch DVD discs?

Fuzzy

Thank you everyone for your replies so very much - I learned a lot.

yes, I am from Canada and my cable supplier and STB is Telus - after I posted this and went to the living room and checked I was sheepish to realise I do
have the same STB as in the picture, lolol

It doesn't have CC, so we most certainly will call Telus and ask if they have one with CC. Since they have better ones, where you can record more movies at once and view other channels while recording and other options, chances are the CC is there as well :fingersx:
We will ask about Tivo, too, thx.

I think your STB (called Optik TV HD digital box ) has a built-in CC decoder. Check this out. Optik TV video tutorials | Client zone | TELUS TV | TV | TELUS

Select one of the video tutorials called "Display settings" on the right side.
Then play it until 40 seconds and you will notice that this menu shows "Closed captioning" on the bottom of the selections.

So to try it, follow the intructions in that video except selecting "Closed captioning" instead of "Screen aspect ratio and high definition". And then turn CC on.

What's more, the user guide (page 13 of 49) shows that it has CC settings.

Settings

General
Allows you to turn system sound effects on or off, access system information and
troubleshoot your connection

Television
Allows you to customize your guide, favourites list, screen aspect ratio and
closed captioning

Audio
Allows you to activate descriptive video and change your digital audio
output settings

Parental Controls
Allows you to block On Demand titles, PPV events and programs by channel,
rating or content.

Restart system
Reboots your digital box. All your user settings will be saved.

Optik TV Account
Create an Optik TV account to use applications like remote record and Optik on
the go

PS oh, damnit! I was too late.

PS oh, damnit! I was too late.

Watch DVD movies with SDH, not TV programs.

Thank you for both - your information still is VERY useful - maybe someone else can go this route. Or even I in the future.

So, still - BIG thank you !! :ty:

You are welcome. Thank God that your STB includes CC decoder so you can use HDMI. Problem solved!

If you have questions about anything else like screen aspect ratio, PVR, etc, please don't hesitate to ask.
