New program in Texas jails illegal immigrants

EAGLE PASS, Texas (Reuters) - A pilot program that jails all illegal immigrants crossing into this Texas border town from Mexico has led to a dramatic fall in numbers attempting the journey, the U.S. Office of Border Patrol said on Friday.

A program known as Operation Streamline II, instituted on December 12, is aimed mostly at non-Mexican illegal immigrants who were arrested and released because Border Patrol agents did not have sufficient space to jail them.

The blanket crackdown is also being applied to undocumented Mexicans who were previously subject to criminal background checks and released back over the Rio Grande without charges.

The U.S. Marshals Service has freed up 1,000 beds in several county jails abutting the Border Patrol region that includes Eagle Pass, Texas, to accommodate the growing number of immigrants.

"The message is one of zero tolerance to all illegal immigrants, whether they are Mexican or (non-Mexican) nationals," said Hilario Leal, the U.S. Border Patrol's spokesman for the sector that includes Eagle Pass.

"It appears to be getting out by word-of-mouth and through the media south of the border, as the numbers attempting to cross has fallen dramatically."

Since the pilot program began around Eagle Pass, 140 miles west of San Antonio, the number of undocumented immigrants picked up by Border Patrol agents has dwindled to 10 a day, down from highs of around 150 a day in mid-2005, officials said.

The U.S. Office of Border Patrol said 740 illegal immigrants have been arrested and charged with misdemeanor illegal entry under the program. They are tried in federal court and jailed for up to 180 days pending deportation to their country of origin.

"We have lots of space, and we can handle all the prisoners the court sends us," Deputy U.S. Marshal Tim Hughes said. "If it grew to an incredible number we could send them out of state."

Each year, an unknown number of illegal immigrants, most from Mexico and Latin America, cross the 2,000-mile (3,200-km) border from Mexico, seeking a better life in the United States. Last year, almost 1.2 million were nabbed making the journey.

A proposal in the U.S. Congress to build a steel fence equipped with lights and security cameras has angered Mexico.

I was born and raised in TX and I find this hard to believe, especially the quote that I bolded. Many jails there are already overcrowded and court systems have enough on their dockets to keep them busy for years.

I'd like to know how long this program is going to continue and where the funding is coming from. For each immigrant that is arrested, that county has to come up with money for food and housing. The part about sending them 'out of state' is a joke. Texas' budget was in trouble before the Katrina refugees showed up and this is another expense that will be paid for by the taxpayers sooner or later.

Sadly, illegal immigration has been a problem for many years. For every illegal immigrant that is caught, there's probably 5-10 that aren't. Even the crappy jobs at McD's and Wally World are better than many can find in Mexico. Until something is done to address that situation, there will be a steady stream of people trying to cross the Rio Grande.

Yeah , I was born in Texas too and now live in Pennsylvania. I thought the Texas state budget was in good shape and that there was more border guards since Bush was voted President. I have not been to Texas for a while and have not gone across the border of Mexico to shop for good things for a while. I know that the Texas U.S. Army National Guard has been helping the US Border Patrol agents patrol the Texas/Mexico border. You live in Texas full time. One day I would like to live in Texas full time too. :) :thumb:

Opinion about TX

I left TX back in September. The state budget is a mess and the legislature still hasn't come up with a fair way to fund education. Even after a regular session and TWO special sessions, they couldn't come up with a plan. That was just last year's fiasco. It's gone on for YEARS.

I don't like Rick Perry any more than I do George W. It's hard to explain, but the LT Governor has more power in TX. The governor is more of a figurehead than anything else. It goes back to the Civil War years and an administration that had more problems than US Grant.

If you want to read more about TX, here's a link to the San Antonio paper:

Thanks I am from Houston. I will look at the newspapers now? Link does not work? Thanks ITPjohn

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but none of my hyperlinks lately have worked. If you want more than the SA paper, try Yahoo search using 'newpapers + Texas'.

I saw your TX jokes on the other post. ROFL - good thing I haven't had lunch yet.

If you move to TX, you can sell the trenchcoats and snow tires to stock up on sunscreen and shorts. They've had a light freeze in San Antonio back in November and it may get down to 20's for a couple of days for their 'winter'. It's been 70+ there since I moved and was 85 degrees for New Years Day. Can you handle that??

Thanks and no problem. I have always liked the Texan weather, just miss the snow though. Check your " additional options " to check the box that says
" Automatically parse links in text " Hope that helps :)

If that does not then post a message or send a private message to Roadrunner. He will look into your situation concerning some of the links that are not working. Should be fixed and no problems in the future.

Texas police officer's video clip on Google. He made a good arrest of an illegal mexican alien. In Texas , cops can do this and it is legal.

Texas will not bow to liberal crybaby politicans.

Texas cops save lives and Texas cops arrest or shoot to kill bad guys.

Here is a Texas cop doing the job as a cop ought to do his job making sure the illegal mexican alien learns his lesson to never run from the cops. That cop sure is aggressive , man. It does not pay to mess with the cops. :) :thumb:

I think this is a good idea. This would greatly reduce the chance of terrorists hitting us.

Bad news for border agents, someone hire assissants from MS 13 gang to kill those border agents. Time for US govt do something about our border and them.
