New Mexico lawsuit: deaf student raped - KCBD, NewsChannel 11 Lubbock |
The parents of a former student at the New Mexico School for the Deaf who was raped in a campus bathroom are suing the school.
They say in the suit that administrators knew of the perpetrator's previous sexual advances toward the student and did nothing.
Jorge Chavez pleaded guilty to statutory rape and sex with a minor last year in connection with the October 2006 attack on the then-15-year-old student. He was sentenced to three years probation.
But, the lawsuit says, the student and her parents had told school administrators months before the rape about Chavez's sexual interest in the student and were assured that she would be protected.
School Superintendent Ronald J. Stern says he can't comment, but says the safety of students is important.
