New kit for Exeter Deaf Academy (From Mid Devon Star)

THE football team at Exeter Deaf Academy has its own set of kit for the first time thanks to a £400 donation and sponsorship from EDF Energy.

The energy company agreed to sponsor the team at the Topsham road site, with the new blue and orange kit arriving in time for the team’s debut in the All Abilities Count league this month.

Previously, the side relied on borrowed kit from Exeter College.

Richard Browning, EDF Energy’s head of customer service (South West), said: “When we heard about the team’s plight we were delighted to step in and help.

“We support a range of community and environmental causes in the South West and it’s great that the Exeter Deaf Academy football team will have their own new kit as they enter a new league.

“I hope it’s a fun and successful season!”

The All Abilities Count league will pit the side against other teams of students aged 16 and over who are disabled or have special educational needs from across south Devon and Cornwall.

Jamie Perree, the club captain, said: “We are delighted with the generous contribution from EDF Energy.

“The squad look really good in their new kit and we hope it encourages us to win the league this year!”

The squad of around 15 players train every Monday and Thursday, with matches played on Sundays throughout the academic year.

Jonathan Farnhill, chief executive at Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education, said: “The students look fantastic in their new kit, and they are really proud to wear it.

“It encourages our students to keep fit and develop their skills and self-confidence. “It’s very kind of EDF Energy to support us in this way, and we’re really grateful for their support.”

The academy has 123 students this year. As many of the students attend on a residential basis, it runs a 24 hour curriculum with plenty of additional activities.
