Hi! I am new to the group! I am a mom to four kiddos and a deaf education teacher. My husband and kids are in the process of learning ASL to communicate with our newest son who is profoundly deaf. We adopted him from China two months ago and he had no language before that. We would like to use this forum to gain more insight into the Deaf community as well as check for signs occasionally. We haven't decided on amplification for our son at this time. Hearing aids are not helpful. He may qualify for a CI. We may decide to go without amplification for him. I'm interested in following many of the threads on this site! Thanks for having us!

Welcome Erin,

We adopted my little (now 5!) at 1YO from China, and became quickly aware while still there that she was deaf. Sadly though, her orphanage had not been aware and she, like your child, was without language for that first year, as doctors later informed us that she was profoundly deaf from birth.

She's currently age-appropriately fluent in both ASL and English, thanks to a wonderful family sign program, a brilliant bi-bi school for the deaf which which she's been associated for 4 years, attending full-time preK for the past 2, and bilateral CIs that provide excellent access to sound.

Now, at her insistence, she's takes piano, rhythmic gymnastics and KungFu, and we're working slooooowly to learn Mandarin -- all of us :) (she adores all things Chinese, not sure where the piano fits in).

Wishing you so much joy -- from the very first moment, it's truly been such a wonderful adventure for us.
