New director named for Scranton deaf school - News - The Times-Tribune

A principal from Iowa will be the new director of the Scranton School for Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing Children.

Rebecca Gaw, principal of the high school at the Iowa School for the Deaf, will start the position in July and will lead the school past its transition, officials said.

"We're very happy with her," said Donald E. Rhoten, CEO of the Scranton school and the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. "Finally, we've reached a point where there will be stability."

Ms. Gaw was hired after a three-month national search, and will be committed to individualized education programs for each child and communicating with parents and students, Mr. Rhoten said.

She also will lead the school at its new location, the former Lourdesmont property in South Abington Twp. After renovations, the school will move from its campus in Scranton's Green Ridge section to Lourdesmont in June. Forty students are expected to be enrolled next year.

The state gave the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf operation of the Scranton State School for the Deaf in 2009. In its first year of operation of the Scranton school, WPSD leased the state-owned campus on North Washington Avenue and renamed the school the Scranton School for Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing Children.

Marywood University paid $500,000 to the state this year to obtain the 10-acre property in Green Ridge.
