Greetings,

Together with some fellow students we're trying to create a new device,
which is aimed to help people who suffer from being fully deaf or near deaf.

It's just an school project, so we have an low budget, but we are still trying to make the first prototype as good as possible.

The current concept is to implement two to three small microphones into an normal jacket, one at each side and maybe one at the back.

These microphones are connected to an arduino (sort of computer chip) which is connected to two up to three small 'wave' devices, who are also placed at the left and right side, and maybe one at the back.

When the micrphones receive a noise that is loud enough (the trigger value can be changed by an simple small controller, for example very crowded places) the computer chip sends an signal to the wave device corresponding to the side of where the sound came from, which will start to vibrate.

The whole idea behind this is to enable deaf people to make some use of sound, by getting alarmed in time in for example when an car aproaches, or when some one is asking a question/talking to a deaf person which he might normally not notice. A few more examples can be named, but I hope you get the concept.

Now my question is the following: What do you think of such an concept? Do you have something that you think would also fit in great? New idea's, addition, feature's, name it. All feedback is welcome!

First of all.. I don't suffer from Deafness.. I embrace it.

Second: This has been attempted. It's nowhere. Just lettin ya know.

Every student who comes here with a project in mind seems to want to invent this useless cumbersome device.

I have an idea, why don't we invent a device to deflect bad ideas that have been suggested more than once? I too have a low budget but I still want the prototype to be as good as possible. All suggestions are welcomed! :D

;)

I am not too sure if someone already invent something that if someone talks to you with your hand held device that allows you read what the person talking to you same time and then you or anyone type on device with speaker to tell the hearing what you said - but again i am sure that device takes so much times back and forth without write down on piece of paper or something like that..... IMO

You know... I keep seeing stuff like this and well.. I just want to point out that...

Most people who get hit by cars can hear and see just fine!!! There is no epidemic of deaf people getting killed cause they can't hear what's coming.

Should all these friggin' kids with their ipods on wear this jacket too?

FACT#375: Some deaf people actually die of old age! Many of them do not die from their "Deafness"

Sentement appreciated tho! :)

Invent something for hearing and seeing people... they are usually the ones who can't adapt.
Or invent something so deaf people can experience musical entertainment. They can protect themselves.
Perhaps a new MIDI interface device? I am building one. Don't need input from deaf people though.
I like the lights and vibrators too :)

Ty for the feedback. Can some one point me at the right direction of one of the projects that has attempted this already, so I can try to see why that failed?

I am not deaf, but if I were, I wouldn't want to wear some lame-ass jacket to feel like I am safe. I get your idea really I do but the failure is in trying to compensate for something technology can never catch up with, human adaptation. Deaf people will probably have an evolved sense of vibrations anyway so they don't need the jacket.

Youtube the Deaf Ninja.. and when you realize that you can't even enjoy the simple story because you are ASL impaired (if you are) you might realize that disabilities and deafness are not disabilities, just different abilities.

Deaf people will find this idea offensively unhelpful. If you succeed, you will no doubt walk out the door after recieveing your nobel prize and get hit by a car yourself (It's Murphy's Law, and it beats Newtons' every time) :)

PS I am a sound engineer and I doubt you could get such a device to work on a low budget. Even for a working prototype you would need expensive directional-condensor mic's for one.

douw3rd,

FYI, some deaf people do have some hearing with an hearing aid or cochlear implant.

I sure could use a device that type out whatever the speaker is speaking. I don't see how it could be done because of the many different accents.

I don't "suffer" from being Hoh/Deaf either ... what a horrible phrase!!

The reason the projects have failed - because they AREN'T NEEDED

There might be a use for this type of thing, but certainly there are better uses for your project time. What about people that live in warm places; they would not wear a jacket much. Or if it was an extremely cold area, the mics would be muffled by winter coats. When you yell at someone, and they don't respond, it might mean they are deaf, or maybe they just are ignoring you. I appreciate that you want to help. Better to gain knowledge about the people than to look at making devices.

ummm ... it is ????

I certainly don't appreciate any type of "deaf people are helpless and craving anything to make them more hearing" sentiment ...
