I am a deaf girl and also a NYS Certified Teacher. I lost my hearing about 15 years ago, around the age of 27. I suffer from Late Onset Sensorineural Hearing Loss severe-profound. My dB loss is about 65-70 in both ears. My goal is to reach as many people as I can who will benefit from this book and not suffer through all the angst and negative turmoil for years –as did I.
This book is for anyone suffering from late onset deafness or for their family and friends! Written in conversational English, this compact guide is full of advice, tips and humorous anecdotes.
“A Survival Guide for New Deafies” is a must read for anyone affected by hearing loss, whether it’s a family member or you, yourself suffering from the loss. This book is a comfy blanket making you feel safe in the new world. The survival guide is filled with practical often not thought of advice that is simple to implement into your life. The top ten rules for new deafies have a major immediate impact on your quality of life when you use them.
The book offers Do’s & Don’ts for family and friends, The Pro’s of being a Deafie, De-mystifying Audiograms, and a unique story about living with deafness.
I am also launching a grass roots campaign to help eradicate the stigma of wearing hearing aids and cochlear implants and also to de-mystify deafies and the use of sign language. “We wear hearing aids or cochlear implants to hear. Just like people wear eye glasses to see. We use sign language to communicate like hearing people use their voice. It’s not rocket science!” The campaign slogan is “Flaunt Your Bits & Pieces!”
