I recently learned something about Netflix streaming videos that could be great if they fixed it. Believe it or not it's possible to add your own subtitles (such as subtitles you can download from sites like subscribe.com) to the streaming videos on Netflix. But there's a problem. They won't let you turn them on.

Let me walk you through the steps and you'll see what I means.

If you open a Netflix streaming video. Pause the video then left mouse click on the video (nothing will happen when you click in the video but it has to be done for the next step to work). Now use the keyboard shortcut by clicking ALT/SHIFT/CTRL/M.

A dialog box will open. One of the links in the box will say "Load custom DFXP file". If you click this link you can add your own subtitles file that you've downloaded onto your computer.

When you download subtitles they are usually either .SRT or .SUB. files. But a .DFXP is also a subtitles file and it's the kind Netflix uses. So you'll have to convert the SRT or SUB file into a DFXP subtitles file.

I tried it. It'll load into the Netflix streaming video just fine. It shows up on the videos subtitles menu. But, it won't let you turn the subtitles on. I've been trying to figure our how for a week now with no luck.

I've contacted Netflix. No reply so far (big surprise). But if they could get this working the subtitles issue will be much improved there. Maybe if enough of us mention it to them they'll start to listen. I doubt it but can't hurt. Maybe tweet their @Netflixhelps

I found a free srt to DFXP converter on line. Just imagine if they don't have subtitles for a video you want to watch you could add your own in a minute it two.

I started a twitter hash tag #netflixsubtitles also use #netflix so maybe they'll see it better. ;)

I checked out subscribe.com but it looks like the wrong URL. Maybe you meant opensubtitles.org? You can try its forum for a possible solution.

Thanks. Your right it's .org instead of .com. But that's just one of many sites you can download subtitles from. This issue is with Netflix and the sublight video software it uses. Thanks though.

This Netflix feature has been around for a while. And it looks to me as if it is working, now. One known problem is that the Netflix app is very picky about the format of the DFXP subtitle files. Watch out for any special characters in the file (other than a...z, A...Z, and 0...9), because they can spoil the whole file for Netflix.

I just tested the DFXP subtitle file for Blind Date on Netflix, and it worked fine.

Got the file from:

is this only for steaming on the computer that the subtitles work? I generally use Netflix on my Wii.

I have PS3... would it work for that, or best for laptop? (which I don't mind using as long as the dang subtitles would work for every episode!)

I'm with you guys on badgering Netflix politely to change their ways, although their email is moot point. They changed their services to phone calls only, and I wonder why? I know that in 2010-ish a group of deaf people got cranky and demanded equal access and more subtitles, they caved but now this? Is this an attempt to try to get away with it and not deal with that?

Yes, it's working great now!

You can now watch just about anything in netflix with subtitles. Well, I've found a couple of movies I couldn't find the right subtitles for but most can be found in the various subtitles sites.

Here's a link to detailed instructions on how to do it.

This is great!!!
I think this method is only for computers?
How do you get it to work on a Samsung Blu-ray?

This is frustrating. I'm going to go with blockbuster's DVD-by-mail as Netflix FORCES you to buy streaming first, then add the DVD, not DVD only.
GREEDY!!!
