Need help to understand way of communication

Hi there,

First let me introduce myself. My name is Leon, I live in the Netherlands and I study to become a visual designer. One of the projects I'm doing right now is called "second screen".

A second screen must be built to enrich the experience of watching tv.
My goal is to help deaf people watch television just as everybody does. I think there is not enough support available and therefore I would like to build an app.

The second screen app must be used as an app that gives live translation to the viewer. One can open the app whilst watching television and understand the program he's watching by swapping his sight from the app to the television and vice versa.

Because I'm not deaf myself but really want to understand deaf people better I would like to know if the idea mentioned above could actually work.

- Would you miss tons of information if you must swap your sight between two screens?

- How important is eyecontact in communication when it comes to sign language?

- Is the setup/positioning of the screens important?

How would this be better than Closed Captions/ Subtitles?

Yes - You'd miss a ton looking between screens unless the "second screen" was actually a transparent overlay.
 
Well, the main idea to built this app is because the state of the body also is important in communication.
What if you'd place your tablet slightly in front of your television? Would that help the swapping?

Or do you think this is idea just idea? Maybe you have some ideas you ever came up with whilst watching tv?

Can you explain more specifically about what the app would do?

I don't really understand - is the idea to have someone interpret what's on tv and then be able to watch both (if so that's a billion dollar project you're talking about).

Please explain what the App is suppose to do (perhaps with an example)
 
Im sorry I dont have any examples yet.

In the Netherlands there's a public broadcast channel family which exists out of Nederland 1, Nederland 2 and Nederland 3.
What I am trying to do is to make an app for these three channels that shows a sign language translation.

So on the time a programm is broadcasted I would like to do a live broadcast of the translation on the Second screen.

I also found out that prelingual deaf people use words in A other way when they use it in a sentence. Thats why sign language might also be handy.

If the tablet were to be put in front of the bottom right corner, would that make it easier to follow?

I think it already exists some places to show an interpreter in a little box on the tv screen separate from the broadcast but on the same screen.

Captioning is a lot better for most people.
 
Bottesini, you say that captioning is better for 'most' people. Can you also tell me what group of people could benefit a sign language support?

Illiterate people who use sign language.
 
I think there may be a fundamental problem with your idea, in that most people who sign are also literate, therefore most prefer subtitles/captions.

I'm trying to figure out how this would work - you'd have to employee dozens of interpreters to provide the interpretation (signing), then sync it to the independent program audio & video ... all real time?

This sounds like a multi-million dollar venture - do you have investors willing to finance it?
 
Idea

@ Anij, The way this should work is that are three channels. These three channels are each from the same television producer. I want to do a live sign language translations. This could be made possible because of the new technologies in digital television. One could sync its tablet with the programm on television so the translation is correct.

Also why I came up with this idea is because I read on the internet that reading is a big issue because that word knowledge of born deaf people is lower.
Also a friend of mine has problems with writing and I thought this was due to her disability to hear. The reason for this is because words are also being learned when you hear them very often and for example, if you hear them in a specific context.

Also I've noticed that there is just one program in the Netherlands that uses this type of translation. This program is being broadcasted on the same channel that i'm creating this app for.

Sorry if it feels that im stubborn and that I don't want to change my idea, its just the idea that its already being used but that actual people who could use it say that they prefer captions. Also my feeling says that a second can enrich watching tv for deaf people aswell however I have not found a way to do this yet.
