Hello! I am hearing and have a deaf daughter. She is expecting her first child, and I need some help. While I have several deaf friends, most of them are older and when asked, didn't know what to tell me.
The problem: I don't know what equipment she will need after the baby is here. Like what will she need at night so when the baby cries it will wake her up? I don't know any deaf that have had babies recently, so I am at a loss and want to help her get anything she is going to need to make it easier for her and make her feel better at ease. Any help or advice would be so much appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, I sign, so we can communicate. She is not sure what all is out there herself. I also want to try and surprise her with some of it. I have tried looking at Harris Communication, but I was just not sure if there is something out there specific to helping with babies. She has the shaker for the alarm and also one for making the light blink for alarm. I will check out the site, Thanks!

I guess I didn't look in the right spots... LOL! Thanks!
I would still be interested to know any recommendations for anything specific that people have used themselves or friends, and liked or preferred.

If you have not yet thrown a baby shower, this would be an excellent way to get her some of the things she will need. Try to include as many of the deaf friends she had and inform them to put their heads together to find our what she needs. Somethings can be expensive but the friends can team up where several people go in together.
I'm a man but I've know many deaf women to have a baby shower like this, especially the first born.

Thanks Rolling7. We have not done a shower yet. We will be doing that this summer. She is due the end of August.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry Bold )

I have a sound signaller/ baby cry that works with my Sonic Alert system ... You put the transmitter in the baby's room, and the Sonic Alert receivers around the home.

Also baby monitors that have a clear visual "sound level" display are also great (you can have more than one type of monitor set up such as an Angel Care monitor and an extra set of inexpensive monitors with visual display (and sound).

Hope that helps a bit

Hopefully, there is a Father in the picture and help so that a person doesn't have baby all by themselves.

Thanks Anij, That helps me out a lot. I will definitely look into those. Thanks for the recommendations!
Dereksbicycles, Yes there is a father in the picture. She is married and he will be wonderful help with the baby. They are both extremely excited!

The other thing is to see if there is a hoh/deaf parents and kids group in your or her area - ask the parents what worked best for them etc :)

It's also a great opportunity to meet other hoh/deaf parents and families to socialize with as well as discuss parenting ideas with :)

NEVERMIND....i think i know who you are, maybe not, katsun your deaf daughter is 25 years old this year and lives in PA?

Anij, I know a few younger deaf couples, but they do not have kids yet. Most of our deaf friends are older. We go to deaf socials, and visit with them as often as we can. There are not a lot of deaf in our area. I wish there was, then I could find out from them what they used. Unfortunately, most of the younger deaf that we know prefer deaf people. They won't have a lot to do with hearing. I wish that were different.

katz4life, No, my daughter has never lived in PA, and she is 23. Thanks for the sites though, I am definitely going to check them out.
