need headphones for mild hearing loss

Hi - I know this device is out there somewhere, but I don't know what it's called. I have a fairly mild hearing loss, but I have started back at college, and I am lost! I can't hear the prof because he talks while he's writing on the board (hard to lip-read through his head!), and in lab, the place echoes so much I'm missing out on the instructions. So. I want a headphone device that reduces ambient noises while promoting speech. I only need it for certain circumstances, so far, and being a poor student means I've spent all my money on textbooks and tuition. Advice? What do you call this thing that I'm looking for? Thanks for your help!

You should not have to pay for it yourself. The school should provide it free. Does your school have a Disabilities Office, or something similar? Check with them. Our local college provides FM systems for hard of hearing students. That is a headset for the student, and a microphone for the instructor.
 
You may also request a copy of the instructor's notes. I've done this and I found it helpful in following along in class. If I tried to jot down notes, I'd miss what the instructor said whenever I looked away at my paper. I usually grabbed the seat at front and center!

Worked well, except for class participation. Even then, I'd ask the instructor to repeat the student's answer.

Reba is correct, check with the office. They'll even give you a letter that tells your instructors you have a need. This is what gave them permission to share their notes.

If you're a client of Dept. of Rehab, they can also accomodate assistive technologies like what Reba mentioned - an FM system. Best of all, it's free.
 
Thanks! I'll trot down there today and see what they can do. I'll talk to the profs too, which I haven't done yet. Dealing with 'having to deal with it'. (that's another thread).
