Need auto advice

Also, another factor, whether vehicle is common in auto thieves, even if two different model year and one of them has higher incident of being stolen, and other get real low incident of being stolen, the one with higher incidents will see higher premium than the other one.

Who wants to steal minivans, or grandma's cars eh?

yes. that is dependent on location as well as what car you got.

To be honest, public transportation seems to be only viable option. Don't forget, its only temporary. If you don't have one nearby, then your screwed.

yup... just ride to a parking lot and take a public transportation

I understand. However, the more you can extend the season the less gas is going to cost per year. At some point, the mustang would be an affordable backup.

I worked with a guy that used to drive his bike as much as possible in the winter. He said the heated clothes worked well.

If I were to choose a car, I would get a Honda/Acura as they are very dependable.

just want to add something about heated clothes.

depending on rider's tolerance and amount of wind protection... heated clothes may be useless if your bike has no wind protection.... which is what Saavik's bike lacks. My bike has minimal wind protection and with heated grips + heated jacket, I can tolerate minimum 40-50 degrees for about an hour... or maybe 2?

with a bigger bike like Honda ST1300 or BMW R1200RT.... you can pretty much ride all year around no problem. we have a winter-only motorcycle club here called Polar Bear Run. I joined and I lasted only about 1 month

I don't understand. Are all your prices for brand new parts? Are there no junk yards where you live?

Moreover, with the commute you have why not move closer to your intended location?

Yeah, this little bike is mine.

Not the prettiest bike, but it gets great MPG and it can really move when you need it to. Max speed is about 130 MPH, which I got up to 100 MPH earlier today.. Don't ask.

My bike has no wind protection and my legs freeze on 60 degree mornings. I have about an hour ride to class and back at 75 MPH, so when it gets too cold to ride, the bike is going up for the winter and I won't be able to afford to operate or maintain the car you see in the background, it's just too expensive for the amount of commuting I have to do daily.

I drive a Kawasaki Ninja myself! =D Good bike... I love mine to pieces. Except mine is a little bigger I think. =P

Yes, insurance counts on a lot of things. Before my Mustang GT I had a Ford Escape. Before that, I had a Dodge Dakota RT, now I have a new Scion tC. Funny thing about it, Yes of course the Mustang was the most expensive, but the second most expensive is my Scion tC. I paid less for my Dakota and Escape. The Scion tC is a coupe. Not a sports car... It's 4 CYL... why so much more? High theft rate. People try and steal them constantly. Though, most are unsuccessful because Toyota / Scion went crazy with security features... but the attempts are high causing damage ect ect. To top it off I'm in Florida with all these old people that can't drive for beans... so my insurance is higher anyway... -_-

Another idea would be to get a $1000-1500 Toyota or Honda to use as winter beater. Maybe Corolla. I'm sure they'll last the winter.

Yes tough call, I hate to say it but I think you're asking too much for an affordable car that's also stylish and also fun. See if you'd be willing to settle for a cheaper car that doesn't have perfect bodywork as long as it's mechanically sound. Maybe there's some car on craigslist that doesn't have a perfect paint job but everything else runs great.

Yea, you've either got money for what you want or you have to settle. If you're going to settle it should be on the looks not the mechanics.

I know, but the point is that the less chance Minivans are getting stolen, that is how Insurance companies set rates, the less frequent the vehicle gets stolen, the cheaper rate it will be. Mine has higher rate because it is one of most common stolen vehicle, and one of most destructive vehicle to an property based on property liability.

Just think this way, if a minivan on left side, and fancy sport car on the right side, both has keys in, which one is likely to get stolen first?

Given the chance, people will steal anything.

You're right, it would be stolen first, but they would both be stolen rather quickly.
