NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans Announces the Establishment of Illinois Office

At the Chicago Kennel Show at McCormick Place, today NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans, a non-profit organization that provides service dogs for deaf and disabled Americans, announced the establishment of its Illinois office. Dan Kossmann and his wife Kris Kossmann, both NEADS volunteers, have been appointed as the Illinois State Representatives. The telephone number for the NEADS Illinois office is 312-552-2980.

NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans was established in 1976 to train and provide rescued dogs and donated puppies to assist people who are deaf or physically disabled in leading more independent lives at work, at home and at school. These assistance dogs become an extension of their owners and bring security, freedom, independence and relief from social isolation to their human partners.

The Illinois office is the 22nd state office opened by NEADS. Although NEADS’s primary training facility is in Massachusetts NEADS places service dogs with clients throughout the United States.

In response to the specific needs of our men and women in the armed forces, NEADS expanded its service to include Canines for Combat Veterans. This specialized program provides dogs who partner with our wounded veterans who have returned home and need to enhance their abilities to be independent.

NEADS does not have its own dog breeding program. They receive many puppies as donations or purchase them with funds generously given by puppy sponsors. The breeds most commonly raised as service dogs are Labrador retrievers, Golden retrievers, Standard poodles and smooth collies.

Dan Kossmann and Melissa Litton, another NEADS volunteer, will be representing this noble program at the Chicago Kennel Show, booth 319, McCormick Place, February 20-22, 2009.
