A monthly North Dakota tax that supports telephone services for the deaf is dropping to its lowest amount ever.

North Dakota`s Public Service Commission has ordered the tax to go down from 4 cents to 3 cents per telephone access line. The decrease takes effect in July.

Commissioner Tony Clark says the levy should raise about $533,000 during the next budget year. The tax pays for a telephone relay service that`s used by deaf people. It`s also used to buy equipment to help people who are hard of hearing to use the phone.

The tax is levied against every North Dakota telephone access line and cell phone. It`s been in effect since 1993. It`s been as high as 10 cents per telephone line, but it has never been as low as 3 cents.

North Dakota has an estimated 734,000 telephone access lines, including cell phones.
