Nazareth assault police officer: Police charge man with assaulting police officer - Morning Call

Nazareth police said a deaf man punched an officer in the face early Monday and attempted to gouge his eyes out, according to court records.

Joseph A. Marvelli, 53, is charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, resisting arrest and public drunkenness. Marvelli, of 516 Morrison Place in Moore Township, is in Northampton County Prison under $75,000 bail.

According to court records:

Around 6:45 a.m., police were called to 135 S. Main St. for a man outside banging on windows and screaming.

When police Detective Fred Lahovski arrived, he said Marvelli indicated he was deaf.

Marvelli was covered in blood from an open head wound. Police said he smelled strongly of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet.

Police tried to get information from Marvelli, but he was not cooperative. When Lahovski used hand signals and said he opened the door of his cruiser to tell Marvelli he was under arrest, Marvelli ran

When Lahovski was able to grab Marvelli by the shirt, he said Marvelli punched him in the face, breaking his glasses. Marvelli continued to punch Lahovski and "attempted to gouge his eyes out," court records state.

A citizen helped get Marvelli under control, police said. Marvelli was taken to St. Luke's Hospital-Fountain Hill and while at the hospital, police said he punched a hole in the wall.
