Natural yoghurt beats bad breath

Good dental hygiene keeps breath fresh
Sugarless yoghurt could help beat bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease, say scientists.
Japanese researchers found eating the yoghurt reduced levels of hydrogen sulphide - a major cause of bad breath - in 80% of volunteers.

The key are active bacteria in yogurt, specifically Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus.

Details were presented at a meeting of the International Association for Dental Research.

A total of 24 volunteers who took part in the study were given strict instructions on oral hygiene, diet and medication intake.

They spent two weeks avoiding yoghurts and similar foods, like cheese.

Researchers then took saliva and tongue coating samples to measure bacteria levels and odour-causing compounds, including hydrogen sulphide.

The volunteers then ate 90 grams of yoghurt a day for six weeks.

At the end of the study, researchers took samples again. They found hydrogen sulphide levels decreased in 80% of participants.

Levels of plaque and the gum disease gingivitis were also significantly lower among yoghurt eaters.

Added bonus

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said: "The foundation has long been drawing people's attention to sugar-free yoghurts as a healthy snack, so it is pleasing to hear that it may have oral health benefits we were previously unaware of.

"Frequent consumption of sugary snacks is the principal cause of tooth decay, which can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort.

"Although this research is still in the early stages there is no doubt that sugar-free yoghurts provide a much healthier alternative to sweets and chocolate, and we would encourage snackers to incorporate them into their diet."

One in four people suffer from bad breath regularly, while 19 in 20 are affected by gum disease at some point in their lives.

However, Dr Carter stressed that the best way to beat bad breath was by adopting a good oral health routine.

This involves brushing twice-a-day with fluoride toothpaste, cutting down on the frequency of sugary snacks and drinks, flossing daily and visiting a dentist regularly.

Wow: more interesting facts on yoghurt. Possible to reduce dental bills!
Still true today?
Is this another reason to make home made yoghurt?

BBC NEWS | Health | Natural yoghurt beats bad breath

I like plain yogurt ,I can't eat that fake sugar and I never drink soda or fruit juice. When I was younger some woman asked me to take my teeth out ! And I was like WTF!! I told her that they where my real teeth and she did not believe me as my teeth where so white and perfect! I was about the only kid in my class that did not drink coke! That crap is so bad for your teeth!

good to know....and a good idea for in-between times of dental cleanings. Bad breath is really a turn-off. Have a friend that chewed tobacco for many years, and his teeth are now all rotten and black....looks terrible! Seems he has a fear of dentists also.

A fiscal matter on reduced dental bills- isn't toothpaste cheaper than Yogurt?

Sometimes bad breath is caused by poor digestion. Toothpaste will not help that, but yogurt will.

Don't forget that the stomach valve at the top will open, letting some gas in the stomach out. You might be smelling THAT, especially if you don't combine food properly or have an underlying illness that give off that acetone smell.

It is amazing how many people DO NOT floss after eating. I always do after eating, or as soon as possible.

Oh, and I forgot - http://www.sciencemag.org/content/168/3937/1372.abstract - I've known about this in yogurt for nearly 20 years and haven't eaten it since I found out. Sorry. Try again. Yes, you need to keep your mouth clean, but it's not enough. YOU NEED TO LOOK AT WHAT YOU'RE EATING. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is the culprit.

Oh, and I forgot - Cataracts Produced in Rats by Yogurt - I've known about this in yogurt for nearly 20 years and haven't eaten it since I found out. Sorry. Try again. Yes, you need to keep your mouth clean, but it's not enough. YOU NEED TO LOOK AT WHAT YOU'RE EATING. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is the culprit.

Interesting article. But I don't see why you won't yogurt because of it? It wasn't eating yogurt that caused the cataracts, it was eating nothing but yogurt.
Rats kept on an exclusive diet of yogurt avidly ate the yogurt, grew at a normal rate, were normally active, mated, conceived, and gave birth to normal, healthy litters. However, all of the rats developed cataracts. Cataracts appeared in young rats 2 to 3 months, and in adult rats 4 to 6 months, after initiation of the yogurt diet.

They did a follow up report which looks really interesting:
In a previous report entitled "Cataracts Produced in Rats by Yogurt," we intentionally omitted any reference to the possible significance of our findings to man.1 Press discussions, however, dealt mainly with this aspect. Further, these discussions did not distinguish between the original yogurt and commercially produced yogurt of the variety used in our experiments. The original yogurt, long used in many parts of the world, is made from whole milk, while commercial yogurt, produced extensively in this country for slimming purposes, is made from defatted milk with added skim-milk powder. We would like to make a few comments pertaining to these discussions.

The original yogurt, recommended by Metchnikoff for a long, active, healthy life, is undoubtedly one of the best of all foods known to man. It has long served as the chief source of nourishment for many people and is one of the safest of all foods...

When I buy yogurt, I only buy whole milk yogurt, and when I make it, I make it with whole milk, too.

You have to realize that yogurt is a processed food. The calcium in it is not the same calcium that we get from fruits and veggies. As it is a dairy product, the calcium is of a grade or structured intended for cattle, whose bodies need a much larger bone structure to support the weight. The only milk that would be suitable for optimum health is mother's milk, when you were a BABY. You need to compare the protein needs of a baby that is going to be multiplying its weight in a few years versus that of a human that needs enough to maintain the body structure.

The reason we have animal products in our dietary, possibly, is because we found ourselves looking for food a long ways from the equator, a situation that is hostile to the natural human who may not have developed language nor tool skills (that would be the first few generations of the current crop of humans) to survive the winters (where you might not find fresh fruits and veggies in freezing conditions). To survive, you have to find something to eatIt's not because of health reasons, but for survival. Remember, thousands of years ago we didn't have the means to understand what we ate and why it affected our health.

Why We Should Not Eat Animal Products In Any Form

One more thing - energy conservation. You must realize that to digest animal products requires that your GI tract prep itself for protein digestion through time secretion of enzymes and such for digestion whole (largely cooked) protein down to its amino acids. You can skip most of this energy-intensive process by eating fruits and veggies for their amino acid content, so the amino acids are for the most part in a form that can be absorbed into the body (animal protein cannot be and must be broken down to this level first).

Proteins In The Diet

Read these inks THOROUGHLY.

Oh, don't forget that the studies were published in the Journal of the AMA. These people do not study nutrition, but medicine, disease, surgical technology, etc. They have a passing glance at nutrition, though this is just beginning to change.
