THE father of a schoolboy is claiming that his son is going deaf because a discipline teacher slapped him hard on his face, bursting his ear drums.

The incident took place in a school in Kuala Nerang, Kedah, at around 11am on 2 Feb, according to HarianMetro.

The teacher first confronted Mohd Syazmal Yusof, 17, about a fight he was involved in.

The boy is due to sit for his Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM), or the equivalent of a secondary school graduating examination, at the end of this year.

The teacher called him into the office where the slapping happened.

Mohd Syazmal claimed: 'Me and my friend fought because of a misunderstanding. But the teacher probably got upset even more when I kept quiet as he repeated his questions.

'Then he slapped me hard across my right side five times... and I nearly fell off the chair. The slap was so hard that I couldn't hear and started to get a headache.'

He said his friend was similarly slapped before both were sent to Kuala Nerang police station later that day.

It is learnt that the two boys were sent there because the school authorities want to get to the bottom of what caused the fight.

Mohd Syazmal claimed that since the slapping, both his ears have been ringing and hurting. He also claimed that he was unable to sleep well and that the teacher had threatened more slaps.

On the same day, Mohd Syazmal's father came to school to confront the school principal regarding the incident.

Mr Yusof Ahmad, 47, also took his son to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (HSB) in Alor Star for a check-up.

He told the Malay language paper: 'The doctor who examined my son later told us that his right ear drum was probably broken as a result of the slaps and that he would be deaf permanently if his hearing is not restored within three months.'

'Could have used cane'

Mr Yusof added it doesn't worry him that his son has to be disciplined, but the concern is over whether the teacher had acted in a reasonable manner.

'He could have used a rotan (cane) that doesn't leave a permanent scar or serious injuries.'

The teacher, he added, did not even express any remorse or apologise to Mr Yusof when they met in school.

The father has since lodged a police report against the teacher's brutal punishment.
