I presented my report on Deaf History and Deaf Culture tonight in class. I think I was successful in meeting my goal, which was to help my classmates better understand the Deaf Culture and Community and the philosophies, concerns, beliefs, etc. therein. Most of them were shocked to learn of some of the atrocities that have been committed against the Deaf throughout history. They were extremely surprised to hear of Alexander Graham Bell's position on Sign vs Oralism (especially as he had a Deaf mother and Deaf wife).
I can't, however, accept all of the credit for myself. I also need to thank all of you at AD who answered questions, helped to clarify information or positions regarding Deaf rights, etc.
You guys are all a wonderful group of people and I look forward to continuing to strengthen my own knowledge of Deaf Culture. Not only through all of you, but also through those individuals I have met through my involvement in the local Deaf Community.
