My kid wants a tattoo for Christmas.....

My 16 and 1/2 yr. old son is begging for a tattoo for Christmas. He's a good kid, does well in school and plays football. I'm a single parent (female), and Christmas is a special day and I do like to make my boys happy....but a Tattoo?...
I've tried to talk him out of it, even bribing him with expensive electronics, but a tattoo is all he wants!
Any advise here would be helpful! At what age should a kid be allowed to have a tattoo? I know that I would have to sign for him, and be present when he has the tattoo....
 
I would say no until he is legally old enough and has a job and pays for it. Then he can never blame you if he regrets it later.
 
16 is too young. I have 5 and I am glad my mom wouldn't let me get one at that age. Now that I am older every one of the tatts I wanted at his age just seem stupid. Do you know what kind of tattoo he wants?
 
I have a dear friend whose daughter wanted her belly button pierced at age 17. My friend was simply being a mom when she said NO, wait until you are of legal age. The daughter threw a hissy fit. However, she graduated last year from college and has a great job she loves, and she thanked her mom for being a mom. She is tattoo and piercing-free to this day.

If you are not comfortable with it, tell him no and he can get one when he 18 years old.

Why does he want a tattoo? Is it what his friends have?
 
you are the parent. when he is an adult he can get anything he wants. way too many parents give in. your son will not suffer greatly from a decision like this. he may hate you but will understand you when he is a parent

:laugh2: thats funny. Couldn't have been worse for ya than the time I was at a party about 13 or 14 years ago when a a guy I knew got one and I asked "what is that?". Then he showed me :barf:
 
haha, already googled it a long time ago when someone mentioned it to me.

As for tattoo.....I think he should wait until he's old enough to get himself $$$$ and he pay for his own tattoo. I think tattoo is more serious to get than piercings (especially if it's ear piercing. I waited until I was 19 and with some of my own $$$ to get ear piercing)
 
Well, I put my foot down and said "NO"....His arguement is that his best friend, who is 16, is getting one. I know the mother, and will talk with her about this....He went to bed "mad". He'll get over it in time.
"Tatts" or tattoo's are getting more popular with high school students.

Good choice and he will thank you for it later. I agree with the others that when it comes to tattoos and body piercings the child needs to wait until they are of legal age and have their own money to pay for it, this way they cannot blame the parent for a piercing or tattoo gone wrong. Most reputable tattoo parlors will not tattoo a minor even if a parent is present as it is too much of a liability if something should go wrong either in the shop or afterwards.

I let my daughter get her ears pierced at age 5. She wore the earrings for two weeks then decided she did not want to put them back in. Well the holes healed up then about a month later she decided she wanted earrings again. I told her no, I am not paying to have her ears pierced again. When you are old enough and have the money for it, you can have them re-pierced. Until then, no. She's 7 now and she has not been harmed by the decision. I think I made her a wise decision and in the process she also learned a valuable lesson.
