My house is on the median strip of a highway.

You don't really notice, except I have to leave the driveway doing 60 MPH.

Never heard of a such thing in the US, except there's a Mcdonalds in Chicago and a bus transit station in Seattle metro area at the median of a freeway.

Let's see if I can explain....We have several places here in Jax...where homes were built close by a 2 lane highway. The traffic on that road became pretty heavy, so they made it 4 lanes both ways...2 going, 2 coming....

Most of the houses then were practically on the street, no yards at all!...People tried to sell their homes because of it...no luck! Nobody wanted a home like that!....Trying to get out of their very small driveway (if you can call it a "driveway")...Should be a law against that, I think.... was about impossible!...Cars would be flying by, and the traffic became even heavier.....

Many of the homes became deserted....but some people stuck it out....and when leaving their "almost non-existant" driveway...they would reeve up their vehicle and speed out into the traffic to be able to get to work or whatever....I can imagine the noise of the vehicles all day and night while these people tried to sleep.

Roosevelt Blvd, Jacksonville, Duval, Florida - Google Maps

I don't see any houses on the median. It looks like a normal US highway going thru the city with speed limits of 35 to 45 mph tops.

US17 & Roosevelt Blvd. are the same....you exit off US17 & Roosevelt to Timuquana Rd. ...dunno if it's gonna show you anything when you goggle it, tho'!...Perhaps BabyBlue could help me here?....Feel sure she might know the area that I'm talking about. It's very close to NAS (Naval Air Station).

There's a gas station and a pecan shop on Hwy 90A (alternate), west of Houston. Just east of the Brazos River out of Richmond, Texas. I've been there myself. What's strange is, to get there, you have to get into the left lane and exit off, just like you would if you were in the UK, except incoming traffic is on the other side of that wide median. To go back the way you came from, just go over to the other side and watch for traffic coming from the right side pulling out, and turn left to merge with oncoming traffic. I've never seen this elsewhere.

Sounds a bit confusing. I know a friend who lives in Jacksonville. She grew up there most of her life. But, bablyblue could help if she wants to.

I think that she was joking at us due to joke section. :hmm:

It started off as a "joke"....but the joke got off track....so now I'm talking about the area of US17 & Roosevelt/Timuquana...and it's true about the 4 lane highway being built (because of the traffic), and basically destroying people's front yards and their driveways.....

Gonna PM BabyBlue (haven't seen her around lately, tho')...feel sure she can help here somewhat....

Several major cities have homes right off the Highway. I know exactly where you are talking about. Roosevelt, Park and US 17 are all one road. Jax NAS is right off of 17 and they are expanding I-295 and Blanding as well. Several homes are right off the Hwy. I would never buy a home close to a hwy like that. Brannan Field road is soon to be a Toll road. They are all expanding the hwy. It is a huge mess.

They can google Timuquana and US 17 intersection, and work from there. Then you can see the houses right off the roads. May have to play with the map to find it but it is there.

Believe the area we were talking about was an old, established area and had a 2-lane highway there...so when the city decided to make it a 4-lane...there was nothing the home owners could do....I noticed a lot of vacancy and "For Sale" signs....feel a lot of the home owners just up and abandoned their homes, being repossessed....

They basically have no front yards at all...really sucks. Especially if you had small children or animals. I do remember a friend that was looking to rent a house and found one there...the home owner met her and told her he would not rent out to anyone who had small children or pets....It was as if when you walked out the front door, you were just about on the highway....And the noise from the traffic must be really bad....

So thanks for the better explanation, BabyBlue!
