Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL), a subsidiary of the Nation Media Group (NMG), has donated equipment worth Sh5.5 million to the Buguruni School of the deaf in Dar es Salaam.

The donation includes 100 hearing aid gadgets worth more than Sh3 million and road sign boards valued at over Sh2 million.

Handing over the donation to the school yesterday, the MCL Managing Director, Mr Sam Shollei, said the assistance was part of the company's corporate social responsibility policy.

He congratulated the teachers who have been working at the school since its commencement in 1974 for doing a noble job taking care of the pupils.

Mr Shollei also pledged continued support for the school saying the company would be visiting often to see how it could provide further assistance.

NMG head of corporate affairs, Ms Kathleen Openda said the media group had an obligation to support the needy in the society.

And Ms Matilda Ngonyani, director of the Tanzania Society for the Deaf (TSD), thanked the MCL for the donation saying it would go a long way in enhancing learning at the school.

A Standard Six pupil at the school, Winnie Liko, said she was delighted to know that "there are people out there who remember us."

The school has a total of 240 pupils, including 10 in nursery school, according to Mr Saidi Mkude, the schools head teacher.

The TSD owns the premises and furniture at the school while the Government provides teachers and teaching aids; food and transport.

Mr Mkude said the lack of special secondary schools for the deaf in the country was still a major challenge.

"We do not have special secondary schools, so our pupils are forced to mix with the other students, which makes it difficult for them to learn fast," he said.

At the moment there is only one secondary school for the deaf owned by the Church in Njombe, Iringa Region.
