Musical treat for deaf youngsters - Sunderland Echo
Deaf musicians have been helping young children with hearing problems to enjoy music.
Pupils from the hearing impairment units at Thorney Close Primary School, George Washington Primary School and Sunningdale School were treated to workshops with deaf musician Dr Paul Whittaker.
And it was not long before the children were showing off their new talents by composing their own song called Pirates of Sunderland and performing it at a special assembly.
Lynn Adamson, a teacher of the deaf, who helped organise the event, said: "It was a big achievement for the children. Most people do not associate music with the deaf and it was a fantastic opportunity.
"It's great that someone like Paul is creating these chances and opportunities for deaf and hearing-impaired children."
Local musicians and Sunderland's deputy mayor Mary Smith were on hand to enjoy the songs, along with deaf opera singer Janine Roebuck.
Lynn added: "Janine performed and gave a very moving speech to the children about how deaf people can achieve in music, and told them they should not be limited because they are hearing-impaired."
