DEAF Susan Matthews thought she'd never hear her children her "mum".

Now, thanks to an extraordinary operation, the mother-of-two, deaf since birth, can hear for the first time in 40 years.

Susan could only communicate by lip reading and sign language.

But doctors fitted a cochlear implant into her ear to link the auditory nerves with electrodes.

Together with a hearing aid-style mini computer, sounds are turned into electrical signals.

She said: "Before, I'd never heard my name or been able to respond when my children called 'mum'.

"When the implant was turned on, one of the tests was a baby crying. I'd never detected it before, not even when my own children cried as babies."

Daughter Sophie, 10, said: "It's brilliant."

Son Ben, 13, added: "She can hear us fighting now!"

Susan, from Farsley, Leeds, was treated at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

She now plans to raise £5,000 for deaf people in the Bupa Great Manchester Run next month.

WOW...I'm impressed!!

I hope that there will be new technology that they could resolve how to give us surgery for us to hear without cochlear implant...It would be GREAT and MIRACLE if someone finds solution how to find a way to help us to hear without wearing hearing aid or coclear implant...

Anyhow, I plan to get coclear implant but in the future...hope there will be another miracle for surgery to be hearing...

That's quite amazing, after all, 40 years is quite indeed a long time and I can only imagine how many tissue boxes she's going through now! Anyhow, this surely can bring about closure within the family and sure wishes her all the very best in the days/years ahead! ;)

That is so wonderful to read! Congratulations to her and her family - I know firsthand how amazed she must feel! Thanks for sharing this story.
