The Maryland School for the Deaf football team overcame an early deficit to post a 28-8 victory against visiting Indiana School for the Deaf on Saturday.

The Orioles (4-3) had 280 rushing yards, led by Darrius Doe with 144 yards and a touchdown and Tarik Wallace who added 60 yards and two scores.

"We started slow, but we kept with it and ran a good mix of our normal plays and some of the newer stuff that we have put in," MSD coach Joshua Doudt said through his interpreter, Calvin Doudt. "Our line was blocking well and opening things up for the running backs and we were able to move the ball."

The Hoosiers (1-8) scored first when quarterback Austin Lewis ran for a 5-yard touchdown on a designed bootleg, capping a six-play, 56-yard drive. Lewis connected with tight end Cody Dean for the two-point conversion.

"[After the early score for ISD], we told our team, 'This is not what we taught you. This is not how we play. We need to play hard, disciplined and our way. It's not acceptable to play to their level, we have to play to our level,'" Doudt said. "We practiced well all week, and we just needed to put that into the game."

The Orioles responded on their next offensive possession, taking advantage of a short kick from the Hoosiers, and driving to tie the game at 8-8. Facing a fourth down-and-14 from the 25-yard line, MSD decided on trying for the first down and the move paid off. Fullback Tarik Wallace took the ball on a speed sweep to the left side, then followed his lead blocker down the sideline for a touchdown. Wallace added a 26-yard score on a similar play in the fourth quarter.

In the second frame, quarterback Jake Bonheyo found wide receiver Angelo Archibald streaking down the sideline for a 28-yard touchdown pass. It was the lone completion for the freshman signal-caller, who also contributed 29 rushing yards. After the two-point conversion by James Brooks, the Orioles held the 16-8 lead that they would carry into halftime.

The only other score in the contest was a 7-yard scamper by Doe. The senior running back had a 61-yard touchdown run called back due to a block in the back earlier in the drive. MSD committed 16 penalties in the game for 150 yards.

Doudt said that his squad has a tough road ahead to claim a 10th consecutive Deaf Prep National Title, starting with a long road trip to face Alabama School for the Deaf.

"We want to cary on the high tradition of this football program," he said. "We had a big win last week [against Options Charter], … and we have a couple big games left this season. We'll play Alabama School for the Deaf, and Model Secondary School for the Deaf, and the National Deaf Championship is on the line. We wanted to win today to send out a big message that we are still here, and we still cary this torch."
