MSD graduates encouraged to paint their canvases - The Frederick News-Post Online

Maryland School for the Deaf valedictorian Michelle Mansfield-Hom believes a person's life is a canvas.
"No one dies a copy," she signed. "Each one of us dies as an original."

While a canvas shows colors, it also conveys the passions, beliefs and feelings of its creator, Mansfield-Hom signed. A person doesn't want just scribbles on it.

"One day your life will flash before your eyes," she signed. "Make sure it's worth watching."

Mansfield-Hom is one of 31 MSD graduating seniors. The school's 142nd commencement ceremony was held Saturday morning at the school's auditorium.

School Superintendent James E. Tucker said the graduation of this class was going to be hard on him. He started at the school 18 years ago and saw many of them have their first day of school when they were young.

"We have grown up together here," he signed.

Last year, the school started a tradition of having a teacher address the graduation ceremony. This year, Patrick Rosenburg was selected to offer his words of wisdom on life.

"I'm still trying to figure out what life is," he signed.

He told the packed auditorium that with today's technologies, many people have GPS systems in their vehicles to give them directions.

"You need to go where you want to go and do what you love," he signed. "You won't get it from a GPS."

With several pictures of each graduate displaying on a projector, the students crossed the stage and were presented their diplomas.

"At last our time has arrived," signed graduate DeAngelo Jones.
