Staff, parents worried about campus plan for Michigan School for the Deaf | abc12.com

We are learning more tonight about those signs of protest left outside the Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint earlier this week.

The signs were left by staff and parents from the school who are concerned about what a new business proposal at the campus would mean for their students.

We've learned that a person giving a voice to those silent, anonymous signs of protest will speak out at a scheduled meeting at 7 tonight.

The signs popped up earlier this week. They were clearly in opposition to an expansion and renovation plan for the Michigan School for the Deaf campus. MSD school administrator David Sanderson last week said that the plan involves making badly-needed upgrades and improvement to the aging school buildings by having a venture company make the improvements and then renting buildings back to another school.

It has been reported that the second school could be Powers Catholic High School, but Powers officials have said it's too early to speculate.

Parents and staff are reportedly concerned what the changes may mean for the hearing impaired students and children in the future.

"They know that the school needs some fixing. What they're afraid of is what the price is they're going to have to pay for that fixing as far as the psychological, the cramped rooms that they're going to have to go into," said Linda Hutchinson, who concerned about the plan.

"But they're just very concerned about what they will have left for their deaf children and what will happen in the future that the developer will say, sorry we need more land, you're going to have to find a new building."

Hutchinson says she has agreed to speak for dozens of parents and staff who are fearful of repercussions if they speak out publicly against the plan.

School officials tell us it's a closed informational meeting for alumni, and they're not sure if Hutchinson will actually have an opportunity to speak.
