Have you seen this movie? I finally got it on DVD a couple weeks ago and I adore it. I do have some gripes. My DVD has no captions for some reason (it may be my tv, need to figure that out), and when the deaf charectars are signing they have voices dubbed over rather than subtitles showing what they are saying. That frusturates me! But I did really like the movie and I think it shows different perspectives well. And I love Marlee
Yes, I have the movie - it has CC (make sure that you're connecting your DVD player to your TV using either SVideo cables or composite (red white & yellow cables) as they are the only 2 types of cable that will transmit/display the CC. (component, HDMI etc will not show CCs)
The reason that there is voice over (which is then captioned) is that ASL doesn't have a written form - so really using voice-over (with subtitles/captions) IS the correct way to translate ASL into text/speech
For the play at the start of the film, the parents voice for their children (which provides the hearing DVD/movie audience with an understanding regarding how interpreters work as well as showing the importance of hearing parents with Hoh/Deaf children (who sign) learning and becoming fluent in ASL along side their child.
