Orange Park Family Mourns Wife, Mother

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Tessa Exline's family said she contracted MRSA and died in just a matter of days. Family members said doctors blamed her death on what they call a superbug.

Exline's husband, sister and children fought back tears on Wednesday night as they spoke about her death, which was caused by the bacterial infection that is highly resistant to antibiotics.

"She was wonderful. The best. Great mother, great wife, great sister," said John Exline, Tessa's husband.

Tessa Exline's family said she went into the hospital Friday night and had to be put on a ventilator hours later. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic told the family Exline's case was one of the fastest moving MRSA cases they've ever seen, and they couldn't slow it down.

Exline, 31, was flown to the Mayo Clinic after having blood clots and then a stroke at the Orange Park Medical Center.

"They did brain surgery, and they couldn't slow the infection after 10 days," John Exline said. "Her heart gave out after her lungs collapsed."

Exline's family said they found out she was a MRSA carrier when she gave birth to her 2-year-old child, but they're not sure where or when she contracted it.

A doctor told Channel 4 there are rare cases of MRSA that are almost untreatable because they move too fast, and Exline's case was one of them. Her husband is now left alone to raise three daughters.

"She was the best mom," John Exline said. "Our whole family is here. We've never had nobody leave us, so we try to keep from thinking about the worst.

"I don't think it's all quite hit me yet. It's just been a weird experience."
