Driver runs over mother and daughter. - WXIN

43-year-old Derek Dewitt is charged with attempted murder.

Police say he made a statement indicating he intentionally ran over a mother and her 15-year old daughter who were doing a car wash fundraiser for the School for the deaf.

It happened at 5:20pm Saturday at 56th between Kessler and Emerson on the northeast side.

The two victims are in critical condition at Methodist.

"A man came in and started signing(for the deaf) for us to call 911," said an eyewitness. The man ran into the Starbucks at 56th and Emerson just feet from the crime scene.

"I saw teenagers with signs that they were doing car washes out here on 56th street," said Chris Hull. "They were spraying each other with water and having fun washing the cars. To think anyone would run them down like this, it's unbelievable."

Police say the mother and her daughter were seen in the median on 56th street before Dewitt hit them.

An eyewitness saw a sheet over one of the victims.

She said police told her one of them had taken a turn for the worse at the hospital.

Dewitt is also charged with battery with serious injury and criminal recklessness.

That's terrible! Why would the guy do that?

wondering if he's had a very bitter divorce cuz maybe those 2 people reminded him of his ex-wife and daughter.

My thoughts as well.

the clue was from link in Reba's post

In the police report, one witness is quoted as saying, "There were no brake lights. He intentionally swerved to hit them. He then got out and said, 'Yeah, I [expletive] hit them. They [expletive] dead now, ain't they?'"

Another witness stated he heard Dewitt say, "Yeah, I did it. And you can call the cops and I can tell them why I did it."

:cold:

I'm still waiting. This is insane.

What the article fails to mention is that both the Mother and Daughter are both deaf, they were conducting a fund raiser for the Indiana School for the Deaf.

Yiz

There probably might be more to the story, domestic drama. We can't automatically assume the mom and girl were good samaritans even if they were deaf.

The guy could be mentally ill. Would a sane person wait for the cops after he kills his target?

This story is being posted by several of my deaf friends on Facebook calling it a deaf hate crime but I see no evidence of it being the case...:hmm:

That what I thought.

This reeks more of spousal murder than hate crime.

Yea, I refuse to click on "share" to pass the word around because I need facts first.

:hmm: I wonder, I'm sure a lot of pro deafs are seeing it as some kind of hate crime.

Personally after seeing the guy's mug and reading what he said, I think he has problems of some sort.

Update

Really shady source, but better than nothing I guess?

Driver says he saw 'evil' before running over 2

A driver says he believes he had a psychotic episode when he drove into the median of an Indianapolis street, hitting a woman and her 15-year-old daughter.

Police say 43-year-old Derek Dewitt was driving at least 60 mph when his car struck 41-year-old Tina Boozer-Carter of Plainfield and her daughter, Dawn, on Saturday. The mother was hospitalized Monday in good condition and the girl in critical.

Dewitt told television stations in jail interviews Monday that he "saw something evil" when he swerved and hit the two as they held signs promoting a car wash for the Indiana School for the Deaf, where the girl is a student.

Dewitt cried as he said he was sorry and hadn't taken his schizophrenia medication. He was jailed on preliminary charges of attempted murder.

Video from fox.
Monday morning, the driver, Derek Dewitt, spoke to Fox59 News.

"Yes, yes I caused it," he said.

"No, I'm not glad that it happened."

Facing attempted murder charges, Derek Dewitt rarely blinked as he admitted to causing the crash that left 41 year-old Tina Boozer-Carter and her 15 year-old daughter Dawn in Methodist Hospital, the teen with life-threatening injuries. He blames his schizophrenia.

"I got paranoid, I thought someone was gonna do something to me or something was gonna happen to me, and I felt I had to react," Dewitt explained.

Reporter: "Against those two people?"

Dewitt: "Yes."

Reporter: "Why?"

Dewitt: "Because I thought that was evil existing there."

Dewitt said he heard a voice or saw a sign that jolted him to where the mother and daughter were raising money for the Indiana School for the Deaf. He now says he's remorseful for what happened. As for his comments right after the crash, he suggested a racial motivation:

"I wasn't taking my medication, so I don't know what I said, I remember I said there are a lot of people dying in Africa and third world countries and people die sometimes," said Dewitt.

At the school, where Tina volunteered for her daughter, there is a sense of worry for two of their own, but also a desire to continue promoting the school's work.

"There's a lot of questions we can't answer and we're choosing not to think about it because that's not what we need to focus on. We need to focus on the family and how we can support them," said Dr. David Geeslin with the Indiana School for the Deaf.

Dewitt had a previous conviction for stabbing a woman in Atlanta back in 2001.

As for the victims, the family had only just suffered a big loss two weeks ago, when their home was destroyed by a fire.

So it seems, perhaps he is mental.

Yeah, recreating the image.

Psycho guy driving and forgot to take his daily Lorazepam, for the first time sees ASL when mom signs to child, schizo kicks in and he thinks they are conjuring devil signs.

Runs them over, talks to himself saying he has rid the world of evil and waited for the cops to come.

Seems like the story fits the bits of info spread out. That's of course if he's not lying about the schizo part.

whoa.... hhmm.... why wasn't he taking his medication?

He talked himself out of taking it maybe?

Really wonder how a schizo's brain works. I can count on one hand, the number of schizophrenic people I've noticed in my life for a few minutes.
