Culture can be defined as all the ways of life including arts, beliefs and institutions of a population that are passed down from generation to generation. Culture has been called "the way of life for an entire society."

Deaf people define themselves as Deaf by their lifestyles and way of living that is separate from the hearing way of living.

Just like my hubby doesnt adopt African cultural traditions or beliefs so he doesnt want to identify himself as African-American.

I respect it with the knowledge and understanding that it is not perfect just like any other culture. Who am I to judge and say what's right or wrong about a community of people? Culture has always fascinated me anyway.

U are entitled to your opinion but it doesnt make it right for a whole community.

My husband doesnt like the term "African-American" and considers himself to be American black. In the black culture, there is a big difference between those two terms. Just like in the Deaf community, deaf and Deaf are different.

Its the term I use when I am addressing a group I am not familiar with. Most of the time, I use Black. I'll use African American until I get a feeling for how the person prefers to be addressed. And I find myself using more in formal writing than in actual conversation. I don't think I ever use it when referring to people I actually know.

Well, it is doubtful that I could be considered a "true" expert, except from the perspective of a welcome visitor to the culture, as I am hearing, and my initial connection was through my deaf son. However, I have spent a considerable number of years observing and participating as a hearing person.

I don't see it so much as the desire to be isolated, but a way to deal with the isolation that has been historically imposed by the hearing. Coming together as a group actually mediates the isolation and provides a sense of security and belonging....something all humans crave.

yes i can understand your comments, but still find it difficult to fathom out the hatred from some parts , against thsoe who wish to have CI and integrate in society again, also thanks for the insight about you and your connections to the deaf/Deaf, makes very interestign reading, if its off topic(yes I know:roll Pm me please.

I am not surprised by the death threats, nor am I by the attention by "hate groups." I am also not surprised that Obama sent a thank you letter to a local girl for her letter suggesting a certain breed of dog for his family. That is class.
