More Than 1 Lakh Indian Children Are Born Deaf Every Year | News Tonight
Deafness is a silent and untreatable illness if not handled in the first place and approximately 24 million kids in India are born deaf.
In India, every 2 kids in 1000 are born deaf.
The positive news is that cochlear implants can make deaf kids to have mainstream education and live a normal life.
Dr. Shankar Medikeri, the consultant ENT surgeon of Medikeri Super Speciality ENT Centre stated that hearing loss can be noticed in just four hours of child birth.
"In India, over 100,000 babies are born every year with profound hearing loss anduntreated hearing loss can have a severe and lasting impact upon a child's life," Dr. Medikeri said.
While talking to press persons, the doctor said that early detection and intervention is essential.
"Children learn to talk by hearing what others speak. In fact, by the time a child says his/her first word, they would have been listening to others talk for about a year. So the longer the child goes without being able to hear sounds and words, the more difficult it becomes for them to learn the spoken language," he said.
In actuality, deafness can be noticed in kids as early as a few hours after delivery with the help of contemporary diagnostic tools like an OAE Analyzer and ABR system.
Kids can learn to speak language only at a young age.
As they mature, the "neural plasticity" of the brain decreases.
When hearing loss is not noticed too soon and deaf kids are not treated early, they fail to develop the power to speak.
Clinical researches have also shown that those kids who are born with harsh hearing disorder and have a cochlear implant before the age of two are more likely to attend mainstream schools as compared to those who obtain cochlear implants later in life.
They are more likely to develop clearer speech, be socially and emotionally like other hearing kids of the same age and be capable of working when they turn older.
