Let's say you want to donate a book to a thrift store. You see that the book may sell for 75 cents at one thrift store. It may fetch $3 at a different thrift store. You have a choice of few different thrift stores to donate to.

Does it make a difference to you whether the book may fetch .75 or $3? I know that means no money in your pocket, but does it make you feel better that a place is able to get $3 for your useless book to help less fortunate people as opposed to .75 which won't go far?

I would judge it on how many more miles (gas wise) I'd have to go to help out the charity.

Where I work we donate book that sell for .50 - $1 - $2. Or I can drive two towns over and donate them and hope that they sell them for more. I think in all, it depends upon who is pricing them.
