Hi, I would like some advice re. mobile phones. I want to upgrade my phone, and according to the cochlear website I should be looking for something with M4/T4 rating! Each time I have gone to a phone shop asking for advice I am met with a blank look and nobody seems to know what I am talking about! Most of the websites don't list the rating under phone spec either (unless I'm looking in the wrong place)!

I was thinking of getting an Iphone 3G but then found out they are not hearing aid compatible.

I am not very techy, I just want a more uptodate phone for talking, texting, camera, email and facebook etc.... Am a hearing aid user soon to be cochlear implant.... some advice on a good mobile would be appreciated.

Unfortunately a lot of telecommunication companies' employees don't really understand their own products.

I suggest the following:

  • Go to Phone Scoop
  • Select Phone Finder
  • Select show all options
  • The hearing aid compatibility ratings will be shown about half way down under Features and then Accessibilitiy.

Also not well known, hearing aids use the same ratings (M 1-4 and T1 -4) to rate cell phone compatibility. Get your hearing aid compatibility rating either from your audiologist or hearing aid manufacturer and aim for a combined rating of M6 and T6 when adding the phone and HA ratings. (The higher the ratings the better, but never buy a phone with a rating lower than M3/T3).

The second article also has recomendations on what to look for in a cell phone, so I recommend reading it.

One thing they suggested that I do is to turn off the light for the keypad. True, the cell phone is not as pretty when the keypad lights are turned off, but it makes it less likely to hear electromagnetic field noise when the hearing aid's telecoil is turned on.
