Miss Seafair and other weekend winners
Miss Seafair and other weekend winners
Emily Suen, 20, was crowned Miss Seafair 2007 during Saturday's Torchlight Parade. Selected from 14 other contestants, Suen won a total of $6,400 in scholarships and will attend several upcoming public events, including Thursday's arrival of the Blue Angels.
Suen, who represented the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, is pursuing a dual degree in business and psychology at the University of Washington. She volunteers with the deaf and deaf-blind community, having been a victim of hearing loss herself. Suen also has played the gu zheng -- which is a kind of Chinese harp -- for 11 years.
Suen said she has participated in numerous beauty pageants, but she enjoyed the Seafair Pageant more because she got to practice a lot more useful skills, like public speaking.
"I'm so excited," the Seattle native said of her win. "It definitely was something that means more to me than being a part of a beauty pageant."
