Internationally acclaimed cochlear implant technology is now available in Sri Lanka at ApolloHospital and Durdans Hospital in Colombo. The technology, developed more than 23 years ago by Australian biotechnology company, and implant industry leader, Cochlear Limited, has given hearing to more than 100,000 adults and children around the world with a severe to profound hearing loss. To date 19 Sri Lankans have received the technology from clinics in Sri Lanka.
The first, Mr Lalith Gunawardhana, received his implant in September 2004. For June of this year at least a further three surgeries are planned A cochlear implant is a routine medical option designed to help children and adults with at least a moderate-to-profound sloping hearing loss, to hear. It is an alternative when traditional attempts like powerful hearing aids, no longer provideassistance. Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound, a cochlear implant bypasses the damaged part of the ear and stimulates the hearing nerve directly. Implant surgery today is a routine medical procedure that usually takes a few hours.
The “switch on” of the speech processor occurs around three weeks after surgery. Last year Cochlear launched its latest implant system, Nucleus® Freedom™, which recently won the coveted international Medical Device Design Award in New York. Already six Sri Lankans are using this new award winningtechnology. Nucleus Freedom provides more than 40groundbreaking innovations including the two inone speech processor design and splash resistant speech processor. The Freedom clinical trial results recently released from the United States showed the highest speech scores ever achieved in a clinical trial.
