MADISON-The State Building Commission on Tuesday approved a $231,500 emergency messaging system for the Wisconsin School for the Deaf in Delavan.
The system would be similar to electronic marquees used at airports to indicate arriving and departing flights, said John Brown, who represented the school at a commission subcommittee meeting.
Currently, the school doesn't have a way to notify the entire campus instantly of bomb threats, gas leaks, severe weather or other emergencies. Twice during the past year, an intruder entered the campus, requiring staff to operate in a lockdown mode, which was made more difficult by the lack of a messaging system.
The school relies on a 20-year-old clock and bell system. It continually needs repairs, and replacement parts are no longer available.
The new system is expected to be operating by September 2006.
