Here's something that I'd like to bring on board --

Which one affects you the most? Mental Exhaustion or Physical Exhaustion?

Some argues that Physical Exhaustion is worse than Mental Exhaustion. Some argues that Mental Exhaustion is worse than Physical Exhaustion.

I believe that both of these goes hand in hand because when you're physically exhausted, it also affects you being mentally exhausted. It also does the vice-versa when you're mentally exhausted which can affect your physical aspect.

In my experience - I think being mentally exhausted fare much more because it also drains you emotionally wise; you're not alert; you're not focusing on other issues that needs to be tended to and things like that.

I'd like to see what are your take on this?

Discuss! :)

What a GREAT topic!

I have been dealing with both a lot lately. I noticed I tend to get mentally exhausted by 2 PM during the work week and when it is so bad, I can't exercise so I would say being mentally exhausted affects me more. Also, I am irritable and very clumsy.

When iam physically exhausted from a hard workout but mentally alert, I do feel good.

My spring break starts this weekend and I am so ready for it cuz my job has been draining lately due to quarterly progress reports, the state assessments, IEPs, teaching, planning, and classroom management .

in this civilized, modern world - it's definitely the mental exhaustion.

mental exhaustion. When I'm stressed for any reason, I just can't handle anything.

I would have to say.. they do go hand in hand.

Due to the fact, that when some one is in physical pain.. It can lead to depression and mental exhaustion.

Mental exhaustion can lead to physical pain due to the fact that it can enable a person to be able to function physically..

Speaking for myself, I think mental exhaustion is far worse. I can handle physical exhaustion, but when I'm mentally exhausted, I can't think clearly, I have zero motivation and I tend to become depressed.

I am not trying to offend you or anything. But do you have physical pain that may contribute to mental exhaustion?

Mental pain does contribute to a lot! It creates a mind frame of a person,, to feel enable. to feel worthless. to feel that they can not move on.

Once a person has established a frame of mind. Not saying it is controllable or it won't happen.

I am just saying it goes hand in hand, due to the fact. That depressed people have a tendency to have more health problems.

because of their state of mind.

I also will state that when someone becomes injured or disabled. It leads to a mental state of mind.

So I still believe that they fall hand in hand.

I believe I have posted something familiar to this in another thread.

The body works in harmony.

Although my bipolar is considered "severe," the only health problems I have are year round allergies, migraines and severe carpal tunnel syndrome.

I have 2-3 migraines/week.

My CTS bothers me every day, but there isn't anything I can do about it since pain meds don't help severe CTS. I don't want to have surgery either since there is no guarantee that it would eliminate my CTS.

My year around allergies are kept under control by the allergy med I take daily.

Aside from that, I don't experience any physical pain except during the autumn/winter months when I have severe pain in my arms and shoulders due to the cold.

My GP, psychiatrist and therapist have all told me that I'm very healthy considering the fact that I have "severe" bipolar disorder.

Since bipolar can cause a person to feel severely depressed for no reason, there isn't always a reason why I feel the way I do.

The only time I feel depressed for physical reasons are when I have a migraine or my CTS is bothering me.

I am with everyone else so far. Mental exhaustion is far the worst. Get too stressed and it can keep me from accomplishing anything.

just something to think about. during wars or major disaster... many soldiers/emergency personnel do not get any sleep for as long as 3 days and they work around the clock with very very little break in between. they could keep going if it weren't for their mental exhaustion.

Ok....

People are born with certain genetic traits...

A mental illness (bi polar) or any other weakness, to me is that a person, does not have the mentality to cope with anything that might threaten them.

They do not know how to cope with any type of pain. By saying that... meaning that they do not know how to cope with someone offending them or coping with a physical pain.

HearAgain, I am not saying this to offend you. It is the simple truth.

I do understand the Mental Illness,

I still see it as going hand in hand, with the physical pain.

The reason why I am saying this.... It takes triggers to set it off. physical pain or by being hurt mentally.

Bi Polar or not. Everyone has some sort of triggers to result in any type of pain.

I'm not just talking about people with bi polar... I am speaking for all people that are down.

genetic trait? hmmm I would say that's a small factor but the large factor is the personality trait. IMO - it's the personality trait that plays a large factor in person's durability with mental exhaustion.

Genetic traits... YES!!

It already have been proven.. Parents that are Alcoholics, the children may have the traits of becoming one. (even when the child was not raised by the alcoholic)

So my genetic traits theory still stands.

I am not saying that the cycle can not be broken. but the traits are still there.

sorry but it's not that simple.

I'm a college student that regularly stays up till 2:00 and get up at 6:00 for practice. Being sleep deprived takes a toll on my mental focus, but if I can be mentally focused for long periods of time. So I'd say I get physically tired before being mentally tired.

In my views, mental exhaustion is worse and can affect everything in a lifestyle if it gets really bad.

Has anyone ever been so mentally exhausted that u just cant think AT all? Those are the worst! I used to get that way constantly from working 2 full time (yes 40 hours each job) jobs for 2 years. 40 hours on the weekends at the group home and 40 hours during the week as a teacher. Mondays were the worst cuz I worked until 10PM Sundays at the group home and then work again at 5 AM to 7 AM there on Monday morning and then 1 hour commute after getting off at 7 AM to go teach from 8 AM to 4PM.

I was a zombie Monday nights...and I had to help my daughter with her homework cuz there was nobody else to do it since I was a single mom at the time.

2 years of pure hell...I am glad I am not doing it anymore.

shel,

That happens to me when I'm severely depressed. I get to the point where I'm unable to move, speak or think.

Not always. How would you explain my ability to deal with mental exhaustion when I have a mental illness that is attributed to genetics and environmental factors?
