As part of its "Putting People First" campaign, Cleveland Police has engaged the services of Mediaburst to launch a text messaging service specifically for deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired people.

As part of its

The initiative was created and delivered by Mediaburst of Alderley Edge in partnership with Teleware.

The deaf community is believed to be one of the most prolific user groups of SMS in the UK.

The new service went on trial in January and has now been rolled out to cover a much wider area and involving larger numbers of users. The service allows the deaf community in Cleveland to report incidents or ask for assistance by texting the word Police to the dedicated shortcode 87202 and giving their address and explanation of the problem. Cleveland Police say that the incidents “are recorded and actioned”.

Mick Little of the force said: "This text messaging service is a welcome and dynamic solution for Cleveland's deaf community. For the first time, deaf people can interact with Cleveland Police in near real time."
