Trucks crash: Southbound I-95 reopens after meat, onions cleared off roadway
2:49 p.m. EST, June 14, 2012|
By Arelis R. Hernández, Orlando Sentinel

A blend of onions and diesel fuel left behind after two big rigs crashed on Interstate 95 caused a traffic nightmare — as well as a slippery mess — early Thursday.

A speeding truck hauling meat rear-ended a semi tractor trailer carrying a ton of onions on southbound I-95, closing the roadway in Volusia County for several hours while traffic authorities cleaned up the pungent highway hash.

Toopers closed all the southbound lanes near New Smyrna Beach and diverted traffic onto State Road 44, creating major delays for motorists.

FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said the driver of a meat truck — Pierre McClain, 38, of Hialeah — fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into the trailer of an onion truck at an estimated 70 to 80 miles per hour at about 3:30 a.m.

The interstate reopened around 11 a.m.

The impact was so powerful, the meat truck's transmission dropped out and the vehicle came to a rest only after traveling about 200 feet. The meat didn't spill.

The truck hauling onions, driven by 56-year-old Leonel Vasquez Suarez, of North Carolina, came apart and spilled onto the highway, causing road damage and spilling fuel.

"You can barely walk out there," Montes said, adding front-end loaders were used to scoop up the vegetables.

Emergency responders freed the meat-truck driver, who was trapped in the cab.

He was hospitalized at Halifax Heath Medical Center in Daytona Beach with serious injuries.

Charges are pending against him, Montes said.

The driver and passenger of the onion truck were unharmed.

who won, veggies or meaties???

Well, I'm older to prefer veggies as use to eat salad everyday and avoid heart-attack any red meats.

If I'm younger to love eat any meaties and got fat belly when I was high school kiddo.

What's about you? lol

LOL your talking.. way to go, veggies!

I still eat meat though. If there are plenty of variety of veggies in front of me and meats if they ask me pick one veggie or meat. I will dive into veggies because i m a huge fan of eating veggies with good dressing, breaded, and mixed with fruits, nuts and go on.
