Martha's taste of porridge

10oct04

UNDER the cover of darkness, America's domestic goddess, Martha Stewart, surrendered and went to jail yesterday.

Just before dawn, a car approached Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia. Stewart, who was convicted for lying about a stock sale, was seated in the back seat with her daughter, Alexis. Two bodyguards sat in the front.

The car paused briefly, then sped through a stone gate. And with that, Stewart, the celebrity diva of domesticity, took on a new identity: Inmate No. 55170-054.

She had flown into the state on a private jet and stayed at the home of a prominent politician before reporting to jail.

Inside the prison, she was fingerprinted and strip-searched.

Stewart will spend five months in jail, then five more months confined to her New York home for her conviction on conspiracy, obstruction of justice and other charges. She is appealing the conviction.

Stewart, 63, who has made millions telling Americans how to bake pies, organise cupboards and tend roses, will now lead a regimented life.

She will share a cell with another woman. Inmates rise at 6am to toast and cereal followed by work as cleaners, kitchen hands or gardeners. Lunch is cold sandwiches. Dinner, hot and loaded with starchy foods, is served at 5pm.

An hour after her surrender, Stewart said on her website: "Today marks the beginning of the end of a terrible experience . . . I am now one step closer to getting this awful time behind me."
