Mark Kelly retiring from NASA to be with wife
Mark Kelly retiring from NASA to be with wife - CBS News

(CBS/AP) Astronaut Mark Kelly says he is retiring from NASA and the U.S. Navy to be with his wife, Rep. Gabrielle, as she continues her long recovery from a gunshot wound.

In a Facebook posting, Kelly says he has reached a "crossroads" in his life and is focused on spending time with his wife and daughters.

"Gabrielle is working hard every day on her mission of recovery. I want to be by her side," Kelly said. "Stepping aside from my work in the Navy and at NASA will allow me to be with her and with my two daughters. I love them all very much and there is no doubt that we will move forward together."

Kelly, who served in Operation Desert Storm and captained the Space Shuttle Endeavour's final mission during a 25-year career, said the decision to retire was not easy.

"Public service has been more than a job for me and for my family," he said.

Kelly added that after taking some time off, he will explore "new opportunities" to serve the country again.

Meanwhile, Giffords and Kelly announced Tuesday that they have a deal for a joint memoir. It is to be an intimate chronicle of everything from their careers and courtship to the Jan. 8 tragedy when a gunman shot Giffords in the head as she met with constitutents in Tucson, Arizona. Six people were killed in the attack and 12 others besides the congresswoman were wounded.

Gabrielle Giffords has deal for a memoir

"Since Jan. 8, it's been really touching to us to see how much support there is for Gabby and her recovery, and how much interest there is in how she's doing and her story," said Kelly.

good on him to see that private life is once again more important that professional life.

That is something you don't see all the time. She is lucky to have him as her husband.

Gabrielle Giffords will never be the same woman and this is really sad! She does not look the same, there is something about her that looks off. I think I heard that she will not be able to go back to work.

Yup, I heard about that due to her speak issue. :(

She has 1 year to left to make decision whatever she can go back to congress.

Well considering the massive damage to her brain, it's a MIRACLE she's still alive. She's aware of herself. She has trouble with some of her skills and doctors said it's expected because parts of her brain are damaged.

such a good husband to spend time with her.

Yes, he is.

Honestly, in fairness to the people of her district, I hope she herself makes the decision to retire sooner rather than later. At this point it looks like she will not recover enough higher cognitive functions to be able to serve in Congress. It's fair that she took whatever time she needed to have some reasonable chance of recovery and figure out the prognosis; it looks like she's just about at that point now.

She is a very lucky woman to have to survive this and then have her family be there for her.

I've been saying the same to my SO. I'm so happy she's alive. But if after 6 months, and with no immediate plans to be able to return to her seat, I think it needs to be vacated and filled by someone who can represent Arizona at this time. Perhaps she can fill/run for it later, when/if the time is right.
